31 Days of Publishing to YouTube–What I Learned About Growth

Consistency isn’t enough; at least, not at first.

I created a YouTube channel in October of 2017. I didn’t really have a plan, I just thought it looked like fun and wanted to give it a go.

I started posting 3–4 videos a month. Then, in 2018 I began a weekly art challenge and made videos for that, as well. This brought me to publishing 5–7 times a month for most of 2018, alternating between art process videos and journal “plan with me” videos.

My growth was painfully slow. Over time, I tried to refine my process. I stopped doing art videos because they were meandering. I started actually making thumbnails, instead of picking the auto-generated ones.

Still, I had limited success. Growth remained sluggish. It was frustrating to see so much content online proclaiming how easy it was to gain a viewership on YouTube if you only post consistently. I was posting consistently, but few of my videos gained traction. When they did, I couldn’t figure out why.

The slog continued, and I pivoted again to focus a little more on game development and vlogging, two things that fit nicely into…
