Learn To Model a Creature Character in Blender Today

Game development is more accessible to beginners now than it has ever been before. There are multiple full-featured engines waiting with open arms to accept the new dev, eager to learn.

I just wish that more beginners were willing to embrace 3D art as well. 2D is fine, and typically a lot easier to learn, but I just can’t contain my love for a nice low-poly 3D indie game. Working in three dimensions gives you a lot more room to play (literally, an entire dimension), and I don’t think it’s actually as scary as it seems. With the wealth of online tutorials, and the necessary tools for 3D asset creation avaialble completely free, I think more people should venture into the beautiful world of 3D game dev.

I recently published the first in a series of videos where I cover my entire 3D workflow for an animated 3D character (a bear), but I wanted to include my process in text, here, for anyone who wants to dip their toes in without committing to a video or a course.

The Tools

For 3D modeling, I recommend Blender to newbies and veterans alike. It’s free, open source, and very well-maintained. I have been using Blender for almost 20 years at this point, and it has never let me down. It continues to receive care and improvements and can do everything that a big-name 3D software…
