I love budgeting. I really do.

I love pretty much anything that you can do with a spreadsheet, though it’s been years since I have actually used a spreadsheet for budgeting. I just like working with numbers, figures, things that can be organized. It feels good to put things in order, and it’s important to have your money in order because it affects most parts of your life.

A lot of people don’t like budgeting, if you can believe that.

Or, if they can tolerate keeping a budget, they do the bare minimum. They think that as long as their bank account stays positive, that’s all they need to worry about.

Spending less than you make is a good start, for sure, but let me suggest something more advanced: save extra money for no reason.

What I’m recommending here is essentially an emergency fund. It’s not a new idea, and in fact the more financially comfortable among you are probably already doing this.

But, the statistics on savings accounts (at least in the U.S.) are horrifying. They are always changing, but some recent surveys done by a partner of bankrate.com report that… things are getting worse: https://www.bankrate.com/banking/savings/emergency-savings-report/
